Student Personnel

Eligibility

Academic Eligibility

High School

In grades 9-12, to be eligible to compete/participate in extracurricular activities, students must be passing in six subjects at the end of the midterm and quarter grading periods.  Students not passing six subjects at the end of the midterm and quarter grading periods will not be allowed to compete/participate for a minimum of one week.  Serving of the minimum of one-week ineligibility will begin on the first Monday after the reporting period.  At the end of that week (Monday through Sunday), students will be eligible if they are passing the six classes.  If they are not passing after the mandatory one-week ineligibility period, they can become eligible at any time upon receiving 6 passing grades.  Eligibility will be based upon midterm and quarter grades, not semester grades.

If students are ineligible at the end of 4th quarter, they are ineligible for one week in the summer, or if they are not involved in a summer activity, they will have their one week of ineligibility carry over to the first week of the next school year.  This one week in the fall will only pertain to activities that start before the first quarter midterm since midterm will begin a new reporting period.

During the time in which students are ineligible, they may continue to practice with coach/sponsor approval and must abide by all of the team or organization rules if they intend to participate once they become eligible.

Students will become eligible through the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal by having a grade sheet turned in with their grades and the teacher signatures for the class or classes in which they were ineligible.

The activities affected by this policy and rules include athletics; instrumental and vocal music activities outside the school day; drama and speech; FFA, National Honor Society; all co-curricular clubs; all honorary and elected offices (homecoming, class officer, student government); or any other activity where the student represents the school district outside the classroom.

Middle School

Fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students must maintain a 1.50 grade point average to be considered eligible for participation in extra-curricular activities and to be considered for promotion.  Students with a grade point average below 1.50 on a 4.0 scale will be ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities.  Extra-curricular activities include, but are not limited to:  all athletics sponsored by the school, cheerleading, student council, music/band outside scheduled class period, musical, clubs, student council, conflict managers, peer-helpers, yearbook, etc.  Other questions or provisions will be the same as the high school.

Final grades of a school year will determine eligibility for summer programs and the first quarter of the next school year.  Incomplete grades at the time of grade card issue are considered failing until they are made up.

General Eligibility, 5-12

The building administrators or athletic director can declare a student ineligible at any time for practice or  or competition by informing the participant and parents.  A conference may be required with those involved to resolve the issue when necessary.  This ineligibility will not exceed five calendar days per incident.  Declaring a student ineligible under this provision will generally occur with repeat offenses, excessive absence, vandalism, or serious suspendable offenses.

The coaching staff and sponsors of groups may make other reasonable rules for the good of the individual student and the groups insofar as the rules are not in conflict with school policy.  They may, for example, make rules that would prohibit a student from competition/performance for a period of time if the student has been involved in disciplinary matters in school.

Students who are suspended are considered automatically ineligible for the period of the suspension from school.  This applies to both in-school and out-of-school suspensions.

At the 5-12 level special education students with declared academic ability as a primary concern on their Individual Education Plan will have their academic eligibility set by their staffing team.

All eligibility rules of the state recognized governing organizations of athletics and school organizations will be followed.  Organizations include, but not limited to, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, Iowa High School Athletic Association, music, and speech.
