Student Achievement in Reading

Long-Range Reading Goal

All DC students will be proficient in reading based on the ITBS/ITEDs.

Annual Improvement Goal(s) for Reading for 2005-06

The % of 6th grade students proficient on the ITBS in reading will increase.

Student Performance Trends in Reading from the ITBS, the ITED, and Multiple Measures

What are areas of growth in students’ reading performance in grades 4, 8, and 11?

  • 4th grade boys who were proficient rose from 61.7% a year ago to 89.6% proficient in 2004-05.

  • A huge growth area was students eligible for free/reduced meals at both the 4th and 8th grade levels.  4th grade increased from 49.9% to 87.1% proficient.  The 8th grade rose 46.6% to 68.4% proficient.  In fact, the 4th grade students eligible outscored the non eligible students.  We attribute quality teaching using the strategies of Reading Recovery, Reading 1st.

  • The 8th grade class increased from 63% to 83.5% proficient over a 2-year period of time.  The district attributes this to the students coming from the elementary with increased skills plus the intense training the MS teachers have done in the area of literacy development and the use of focus lessons based on our student data.

What are areas of concern about students’ reading performance in grades 4, 8, and 11?

  • The district recognizes that the next step is to get high school achievement higher.  The high school staff began literacy strategies this past year and will utilize focus lessons this coming year—along with ITED strategies.

Student Achievement in Mathematics

Long-Range Mathematics Goal

All DC students will be proficient in mathematics.

Annual Improvement Goal(s) for Mathematics for 2005-06

The % of 11th grade students proficient on ITEDs in mathematics will increase.

Student Performance Trends in Mathematics from the ITBS, the ITED, and Multiple Measures

What are areas of growth in students’ mathematics performance in grades 4, 8, and 11?

  • 4th grade shows a steady growth.  In 1998, only 62% were proficient; in 2004-05 81% were proficient.

  • In math, girls “stereotypically” have not scored as well as boys; at both the 4th and 8th grade levels this year this was not true.  Over 90% of the girls in both the 4th and 8th grades were proficient in math.

  • In 2000, the % proficient in 11th grade was 67.4; this year the % proficient rose to 74.9%.

What are areas of concern about students’ mathematics performance in grades 4, 8, and 11?

An area that needs improvement is students with disabilities (IEPs).  The district has being using more inclusion classes; scores have demonstrated that doing this increases the achievement levels for IEP students.  All 3 buildings will be utilizing inclusion to some degree.  Inclusion means that the students receive instruction with the regular ed students; the district then has a second teacher working in those classes instead of pulling students out in a special class.

What are areas of concern about students’ science performance in grades 8 and 11?

The district has made significant gains in closing the gap on free/reduced and somewhat in IEP student categories.  We need to continue to close these gaps.
