Geography Bee

By Lisa Wilcox, Middle School teacher

Students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade had an opportunity to sign up and participate in the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 18th with a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee was the first round in the 20th annual National Geography Bee.  10 students answered oral questions about geography. Each student had 1 minute to answer their question. Some questions were multiple choices and some were not. Mrs. Wilcox, who led the Geography Bee, stated,”This is our first year for a social studies academic competition like this, but we hope this becomes an annual event.” Wilcox added, “All the kids really did a great job!”

The students who participated in this event were: Steve Nash, Kyle Spurgeon, Justin Ludemann, Damen Dixon, Park Mikels, Colton Moore, Ben Spurgeon, Secoyia Clancy, Gunnar Whisler and Ryan Blackwell.

The winner of the school-level Geography Bee was 6th grader, Colton Moore. He is the son of Patrick and Kelly Moore.  Moore comments, “I was a little nervous during the competition but not too bad.” Moore will now take a written exam which will be submitted to the state. Up to 100 of the top scorers will be eligible to compete in the state-level Bee on April 4th in Des Moines.   Kyle Spurgeon, eighth grade, and Gunnar Whisler, sixth grade, tied for second place.

The winner of the state Bee will have an opportunity to participate in the National Geography Bee on May 20th and 21st with an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. themselves and their family. Although Moore doesn’t plan to do any additional studying, he hopes he makes it all the way.

Anyone can brush up on geography with GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at http://www.natinalgeographic.com/geobee.
