Activity Bus Routes We have 3 bus routes that leave the school at 5:40 pm during winter activities and 5:25 pm for spring activities to take students to designated drop-off areas who are out for sports, band, and after school classes. Bus drivers work very hard to deliver your students to these areas as early as possible. When we have substitute drivers, the arrival times may vary greatly. We will continue to have sign-up sheets at the schools when we believe bus riders will be low. Click here for Activity Bus routes & schedules

Students in Mrs. Stevenson’s math classes have been experiencing a new type of math problem solving thanks to a math curriculum developed in Southeast Asia. The math curriculum in Singapore has been recognized worldwide for its excellence in producing students highly skilled in mathematics. Students in Singapore have ranked at the top in the world on international mathematics tests in recent years. Because of this, Singapore Math has gained in interest and popularity in the United States. The Singapore Math curriculum aims to help students develop the necessary math concepts and process skills for everyday life and to provide students with the ability to formulate, apply, and solve problems. The area of Singapore Math that Mrs. Stevenson’s students are working with is called Model Drawings, an effective strategy used to solve math word problems. It is a visual representation of the information in word problems using bar units. By drawing the models, students will know of the variables given in the problem, the variables to find, and even the methods used to solve the problem. Drawing models is also a versatile strategy. It can be applied to simple word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It can also be applied to word problems related to fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios. The use of models also trains students to think in an algebraic manner, which uses symbols for representation. Middle School Science Curriculum Aligned The Davis County Middle School Science Department has re-aligned its curriculum to be more aligned with the Iowa Core Curriculum and Iowa Test of Basic Skills. This change gives students a chance to learn more in each science field of chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science each year while at DCMS. Students will now go deeper into each area as cognitive development increases, as well as being exposed to a broader area of each topic. This alignment change also keeps knowledge fresh in students’ minds while preparing for I.T.B.S., which tests all areas of science each year. In the past, the DCMS students focused primarily on earth science in 6th grade, biology in 7th grade, and chemistry and physics during their 8th grade year. Students at DCMS have always scored very well in the science portion of I.T.B.S., but have seemed to have reached a glass ceiling in their performance. By aligning the curriculum even more with the ICC and I.T.B.S. assessment, students will be given an even greater chance of being proficient in science. |
