Miss Rudd’s 7th grade ELA class is currently learning about The Jazz Age. They have been reading a novel written in 1924 titled “The Boxcar Children,” which they will be comparing and contrasting to the 2014 film adaptation. They are learning about music, dance, fashion, and the visual arts in the 1920s. Students will select one of these art forms they believe to be the most influential during The Jazz Age and will create a persuasive “zine” about it. After learning about art, students will create their own “Tiffany lamp.” Additionally, they will select an art movement (surrealism, fauvism, cubism, or Art Deco) and a topic from the 1920s, and they will convey their topic in a painting of that style. On the last day of school, students will be doing a “gallery walk” to view everyone’s Tiffany lamp, painting, and zine! Here is a video of a group of 7th graders dancing The Charleston! This has been a fun way to end a most unusual school year. Link to video: https://fb.watch/5Cn2OkZmBo/

Dear Davis County, Late in the afternoon this past Friday, May 14th, all school districts in the state received updated guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). The new guidance includes the following significant changes: Students who have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive case are no longer required to quarantine. If an exposure happens at school, the school must alert parents and allow them to make the best decision for their child concerning a quarantine. IDPH recommends that schools allow families to start making their own decisions regarding the wearing of masks. The full IDPH letter and revised Common Child Illness and Exclusion Criteria for Education and Child Care Settings can be found on the IDPH website or https://idph.iowa.gov/News/ArtMID/646/ArticleID/158415/IDPH-Issues-Updated-COVID-19-Guidance-to-Schools-and-Child-Care-Settings. Since the release of this information from IDPH, the CDC has issued guidance that is not consistent with IDPH’s new guidance for Iowa school districts and recommends schools continue with current mitigation measures. Today, the IDPH hosted a webinar to further discuss and reinforce their new guidance and justify the new guidelines which we will follow. This past year Davis County has been consistently adhering to IDPH guidelines, having to make difficult decisions that have impacted many students and families. This consistency, while not agreeable at times with everyone nor completely aligned with CDC guidance, has provided some stability in midst of unstable conditions set on by COVID-19. As we have done consistently this school year, Davis County CSD will continue to follow the guidelines as set forth by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Beginning on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 the district will transition to a mask-optional policy and adopt the new quarantine guidance from the IDPH. However, we will continue to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff. Anyone who wishes to continue wearing a mask will be encouraged to do so. We also support all eligible students, parents, and community members to get vaccinated. Should the district experience a significant spike in illness throughout the district, we will take appropriate actions as set forth by IDPH which may include increasing protective measures at that time. Thank you all for following our mitigation measures throughout this school year. This has not been easy. Thanks to your efforts, we have been able to keep our schools open on a consistent basis. Now that the health professionals of Iowa Department of Public Health have determined we are at a safe point, we can safely transition to a mask-optional policy. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school office. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Dan Maeder, Superintendent

DC WENT PURPLE! The inaugural Purple Up day was held Wednesday, April 21st in celebration and support of our military kids. We thank all families, current or previous, that have served our great Nation! From MilitaryBenefits.Info: There’s an emphasis in United States military culture on “the total force”, the “whole person concept” and similarly-themed philosophies which holds that troops, their families, and their extended families are more than the sum of their parts. The notion of the “total force” should rightfully include families as they are the lifeline between military service (especially overseas) and the individual officers or enlisted members. With that in mind, former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger established the Month of the Military Child as a Department of Defense-wide commemoration in 1986. Mustang Wrestling Fans: Here is a message from Tom Keating, Executive Director at the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Due to spectator capacity restrictions and safety measures, it is very important that we share the following with fans planning to come to the event: *Only clear plastic bags will be permitted in the arena. No purses, backpacks, etc. *Masks are required of all fans at all times unless eating or drinking. *Fans are required to remain in their assigned/ticketed seats throughout the session. While we understand not every seat is ideal, the only way we could accommodate 4000+ fans is with a seating plan that spread people out using the entire arena. The safety of all of our athletes, coaches, officials, workers, fans and communities is the highest priority. We appreciate your help in directing your fans to be responsible. Sincerely, Tom

Students will NOT attend school in person on these days. Please be watching for more specific instructions for these days being sent from each building later this week. Please visit our website or Facebook to fill out the lunch survey if you would like to have meals delivered on Monday and Tuesday. Starting Monday (11/30), the district will have two hour late starts every Monday that students are scheduled to be in school. This means that November 30, December 7, and December 21, school will start at 10:15. Transportation schedules will be adjusted. December 14 will remain a professional development day and no students will attend. This plan will be in place through the end of February. The district will re-evaluate the situation mid-February and determine whether or not to continue the late starts into the spring. The situation in our state is changing very rapidly. If the district needs to change the delivery format of instruction, please know that we will send messages via mass email/text/phone calls, post announcements on the district website, and post announcements on the district Facebook page.
Please use this form to sign up for meals for Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24. https://forms.gle/FWSZfFF1i1Cqi3qy9

Please see the following email from Mrs. Melia Piper: Grinnell Mutual, the insurance company, is offering grant money to one of the Fairgrounds in Iowa that submitted a facelift plan. Davis County Fair Board along with our fellow 4 H kids are trying to build a new Ice Cream building. These are the plans we submitted. Citizens have been able to vote twice a day and now it's down to crunch time. As I was talking to some individuals last night we were brainstorming how to get some new voters and that's when I had the idea to involve our students. Voting has almost come to an end so they would only be able to vote today and tomorrow. Voting only takes about 20 seconds! Last I looked we were in 3rd place. With the help of our students I think we could really make this happen. Thanks for your time, support, and help! # DC STRONG Melia Piper https://gleam.io/d02fq/fairground-facelift-2020

Our 2020 yearbook is shaping up to be pretty awesome! Here are a few ways DCHS students can get some more coverage in the yearbook: 1. After receiving several submissions, we have decided to dedicate a page in the book to prom attire! Please consider sharing a photo with Mrs. Mason of you all dolled up! Not just for juniors/seniors - ANYONE can submit a photo. 2. Our book will be going to print on July 1st and we want to be sure to celebrate our seniors! Try on your cap and/or gown and have a little senior photo shoot. 3. Have you had a birthday during our school closure? We'd love to see how you celebrated! We have a few photo entries already and would love to add to that. This year has definitely been a memorable one - thank you for your willingness to share your photos with us during the school closure. It has been extremely helpful. It's also great to see what our students have all been up to! Please email email@example.com with questions.

Dear Davis County Parents and Community, This morning the district went into what we call a “soft lockdown” and did not allow anyone to enter or leave the middle school and elementary buildings for about an hour. We took this precautionary measure because of a safety concern involving a threat made by a student yesterday who did not come to school this morning as expected. This student is now in the custody of the Bloomfield Police Department and no longer poses a threat. We have returned to our normal building safety posture which includes controlled access to the buildings. We will be working closely with the authorities to ensure this student will not pose a threat to the safety and well being of anyone at school in the future. Please know again that actions the district took this morning we’re precautionary and part of our Emergency Operations Plan designed to maximize efforts to ensure safety for our students, staff, and guests. Thank you to the Bloomfield Police Department for their quick response and cooperation in this matter. We will continue to be vigilant in our planning and emergency response efforts to support our number one priority of SAFETY. Please direct any questions you might have to the superintendent’s office. Sincerely, Dan Maeder, Superintendent

Dear Parents and Guardians, Davis County High School would like to inform you that while we have sufficient heat in all second floor classrooms and in the cafeteria at the high school, we are currently experiencing difficulty with the first floor classroom heat. We have had intermittent heating issues within the last cold spell that has been experienced. Until now the heat levels in the high school were acceptable. The building is operated by two separate heating systems, and the one supplying heat to the first floor classrooms is not working properly. A licensed technician from Trane u.s. Inc, our heating and cooling company, will be here first thing in the morning to repair the system, if not yet this evening. Adjustments have been made to move all first floor classes to spaces in our building that are being properly heated. Despite the change in location, there should be no disruption in the learning or the learning environment. We will continue to monitor the situation, and the progress that Trane is making on the repair throughout the morning. If you have questions, please call the high school office at 641-664-2200.

Dear Davis County, Please know we decided to cancel school today instead delaying because weather and road conditions would not improve enough in time to run buses this morning. NOAA weather reports show that temperatures will improve enough this afternoon to allow us to host the high school bowling meet and high school basketball games this evening as scheduled. We will also allow high school programs to practice if they chose to do so, but will not require students to attend if they or their parents are not comfortable being on the roads. All middle school events and practices however are cancelled today. Sincerely, Dan Maeder, Superintendent
