In September, Davis County High School graduate Abigail Warning was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar—one of the highest academic honors a high school senior can receive in the United States. Known by many as Abby, she excelled academically throughout high school and was actively involved in a wide range of student organizations, often holding leadership positions. Her involvement extended beyond the school walls, participating in other organizations and community events.

We connected with Abby to learn more about the rigorous selection process and what this award means to her.

Q: How did you know about and/or prepare for the application to this award?
Abby: I was nominated for this award by Mr. Merck and made it through the first round. After that, I had to submit additional application materials, including letters of recommendation, transcripts, and responses to several essay questions.

Q: I know this has been a long process with multiple rounds of cuts. What was it like to find out you were in the top 10? What was it like finding out you were a top scholar in all of Iowa?
Abby: It was an incredible honor to find out that I was one of the top scholars in Iowa. I was extremely grateful, because being one of the top in the state was something I didn’t really imagine would happen. I was even surprised to make it past the first couple of rounds!

Q: What does winning the Presidential Scholar Award mean to you?
Abby: Winning the Presidential Scholar Award is truly an honor. It represents not only the hard work I’ve put in over the years, but also serves as a reminder of the amazing teachers, mentors, and family who have supported me along the way. I never would have imagined receiving this award, especially knowing how many talented and gifted students there are in Iowa. Being selected is a blessing and a privilege.

Q: What advice do you have for current DC scholars?
Abby: My advice is to apply for as many scholarships as you can, and to be confident in yourself. If you have self-confidence and are determined to do your best, your hard work and dedication will pay off. Just remember to give your best effort in everything you do!

Abby is one of approximately 160 students selected as U.S. Presidential Scholars nationwide. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of the President to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. It was later expanded in 1979 to include students in the visual, creative, and performing arts, and again in 2015 to include students in career and technical education (CTE).

We are incredibly proud of Abby and know she will continue to inspire current and future Davis County students.
