DCMS Well-Being Tips for Students Participating ISASP Testing: Encouragement—Help your children start the day with words of encouragement to do their best, show what they know, and that you believe in them. As adults, we may think children hear words of encouragement much more often than we did growing up…but this is not always the case. Your heartfelt words of encouragement may be even more powerful than you think. Laugh/Joy—Share with your children a funny memory or joyful experience you’ve shared together and have them add their own perspective and share their memories of the experience. This could be a 2-minute moment you share together in the morning recalling a happy time. Research has shown, “a quick burst of positive emotions doesn’t just broaden our cognitive capacity; it also provides a quick and powerful antidote to stress and anxiety, which in turn improves our focus and our ability to function at our best level.” (As shared by Shawn Achor, Harvard graduate, lecturer, global consultant to Google, Facebook, & hundreds of companies worldwide, and author of The Happiness Advantage.) Sleep—According to the National Sleep Foundation, children between the ages of 6 and 13 function best (health, performance and safety) after 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night; children between the ages of 14 and 17 function best (health, performance and safety) after 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. (In case you’re curious, 7 to 9 hours is the recommendation for adults ages 18 to 64!) Consider adjusting bedtime routines if needed to help children feel rested. Breakfast—First and foremost—don’t skip breakfast. We know that mornings can be hectic as families get ready for the day and try to get out the door on time. Remember, breakfast is free at school! We’re looking forward to supporting our students as they participate in this year’s ISASP (Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress). If you have any questions about the Assessments, please visit with your child’s teacher or principal, and we extend a warm ‘thank you’ to our families for helping students feel prepared to do their best.

February was Davis County Middle Schools Mustang Makers Club! Our Middle School Makers learned how to embroider canvas bags, create hand beaded jewelry, make knotted/braided bracelets, and tie dye shirts! Our Mustang Makers did a fantastic job of trying new skills, as well as asking each other for advice/tips. Our students also gained hands-on life skills and hobbies that can occupy their time and mind in a productive and creative way. Crafting, regardless of the medium you use, can bolster mood, improve self-confidence, and reduce stress overall. Big shout out to our local Dollar General for donating white shirts for our students to tie dye! We also owe a big thank you to local Make-HER, Abby Yearling, Owner and Creative of Blackboard Printing Company who made a cash donation to purchase our craft supplies. DCMS March after school club is a Comic & Manga Book Club where students can come have a snack, and draw/write and ultimately create their own comic books on Monday's & Wednesday's after school. Thank you to all the adults who make arrangements to allow their students to come to these fun and creative after school clubs! If your student would like to join this months club please have them contact Mrs. Meg. If your student is needing homework assistance, our Afterschool Palooza is also held on Mondays & Wednesdays. Please have your student contact Mrs. McConaughey if they need help with an assignment, or subject.
