Miss Rudd’s 7th grade ELA class is currently learning about The Jazz Age. They have been reading a novel written in 1924 titled “The Boxcar Children,” which they will be comparing and contrasting to the 2014 film adaptation. They are learning about music, dance, fashion, and the visual arts in the 1920s. Students will select one of these art forms they believe to be the most influential during The Jazz Age and will create a persuasive “zine” about it. After learning about art, students will create their own “Tiffany lamp.” Additionally, they will select an art movement (surrealism, fauvism, cubism, or Art Deco) and a topic from the 1920s, and they will convey their topic in a painting of that style. On the last day of school, students will be doing a “gallery walk” to view everyone’s Tiffany lamp, painting, and zine! Here is a video of a group of 7th graders dancing The Charleston! This has been a fun way to end a most unusual school year. Link to video: https://fb.watch/5Cn2OkZmBo/

COVID Status Update 5/18/21
Dear Davis County, Late in the afternoon this past Friday, May 14th, all school districts in the state received updated guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). The new guidance includes the following significant changes: Students who have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive case are no longer required to quarantine. If an exposure happens at school, the school must alert parents and allow them to make the best decision for their child concerning a quarantine. IDPH recommends that schools allow families to start making their own decisions regarding the wearing of masks. The full IDPH letter and revised Common Child Illness and Exclusion Criteria for Education and Child Care Settings can be found on the IDPH website or https://idph.iowa.gov/News/ArtMID/646/ArticleID/158415/IDPH-Issues-Updated-COVID-19-Guidance-to-Schools-and-Child-Care-Settings. Since the release of this information from IDPH, the CDC has issued guidance that is not consistent with IDPH’s new guidance for Iowa school districts and recommends schools continue with current mitigation measures. Today, the IDPH hosted a webinar to further discuss and reinforce their new guidance and justify the new guidelines which we will follow. This past year Davis County has been consistently adhering to IDPH guidelines, having to make difficult decisions that have impacted many students and families. This consistency, while not agreeable at times with everyone nor completely aligned with CDC guidance, has provided some stability in midst of unstable conditions set on by COVID-19. As we have done consistently this school year, Davis County CSD will continue to follow the guidelines as set forth by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Beginning on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 the district will transition to a mask-optional policy and adopt the new quarantine guidance from the IDPH. However, we will continue to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff. Anyone who wishes to continue wearing a mask will be encouraged to do so. We also support all eligible students, parents, and community members to get vaccinated. Should the district experience a significant spike in illness throughout the district, we will take appropriate actions as set forth by IDPH which may include increasing protective measures at that time. Thank you all for following our mitigation measures throughout this school year. This has not been easy. Thanks to your efforts, we have been able to keep our schools open on a consistent basis. Now that the health professionals of Iowa Department of Public Health have determined we are at a safe point, we can safely transition to a mask-optional policy. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school office. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Dan Maeder, Superintendent
